winter humdrum.... [Feb. 16th, 2013|08:33 pm]

This weekend, now me too...I think being holed up on the sofa watching kid's movies is making me feel way sicker than I actually am..

I'm the best, apparently.

Discovered that Ikea's kiddie beds are quite comfy.

So the next 45 page chapter of my graphic-novel-in-progess is finished and going to be published by Yam Books. I'm really excited about this. My friend Rina Ayuyang is showcasing some amazing artists and I'm a little over-awed to be published alongside them. Read about it here!

Whilst we were on our coffee date, I had a great idea, based on what that kingly fellow I sketched, was doing on his laptop. Imagine if you had a pair of specs that you wore on your face that decrypted what you had on your computer screen? So you could be in public, indulging in browsing your online dating account or watching videos of puppies snuggling, and everyone else would just see a scrambled grey computer screen. But then Ted pointed out that everyone would KNOW you were wearing special specs and would be like "Oh AYE! What are YOU looking at, eh?" Which would defeat the purpose.
(Actually, that fellow in the coffee shop appeared to just be writing code. It was a hopelessly unkempt old man in the library on a different day that I saw looking at improbable women on Match.com)

One of my New Year's resolutions was to start keeping a sketchbook diary, inspired partly by my pal, crazycrone who keeps a great sketch log, and also as a reason to draw for no reason. So I started before Christmas. I'm too lazy to actually scan and post my diary regularly (also it contains saucy dreams, etc, which have no place here) but, whatever, here's a nightly occurrence it is safe to talk about...

Holiday Shopping! [Dec. 5th, 2012|08:42 am]
'The Sky in Stereo' has made a coupla 'Best of 2012' lists like this one (and this one), which is nice. So if you fancy buying this 52 page stocking-stuffer of teen angst and fast food, I'm happy to report that Copacetic Comics has a good stash of them. Other wise they are ALL SOLD OUT. I think. I maybe have one copy left.
 Anyway, happy holidays!

Pym, Pym, Pym. [Jul. 4th, 2012|08:54 pm]
pym
I found 'Excellent Women' by Barbara Pym whilst skulking in the library, looking for someone new to read. It was instant love, she's so funny and matter-of-fact and there's poetry in there too. I'm hooked on her books right now. She reminds me most of Kingsley Amis, she's kind of like a female counterpart to him, in my mind. Her books have a similar tone to 'Lucky Jim' but she has her own cast of stalwarts. Her world is narrow- spinsters, academics, churchy folk, administrators- but her warmth and wit makes her dull-sounding scenarios thoroughly addictive. I keep thinking of a quite proper (and in her own way, adorable) WRVS lady I knew whilst working in a library in England. She even wore tweed skirts and sensible shoes and had salt-and-pepper hair. I recognize Pym's folk and her excellent women are still out there, organizing jumble sales and making strong cups of tea even in the 21st century. It's comforting, you know?
Her fall and rise as a novelist is pretty interesting too.

Glenn Ganges Dolls! [Jun. 10th, 2012|08:56 pm]
My pal and superstar cartoonist, Kevin Huizenga, let me make a bunch of "Glenn Ganges" dolls as a fundraiser for my next mini-comic. If you're gonna be at CAKE in Chicago this weekend, you'll have an opportunity to be one of 5 people in the world who own one!  At a special CAKE weekend only price. Stop by and say have Kevin H tattoo your doll or something, he's table-sharing with me and Ted May.

11 years of Mini-Comics [May. 10th, 2012|11:03 am]

Man about town and cartoonist, Frank Santoro asked to see my back catalogue so I thought I'd scan some covers of my old, forgotten mini-comics up to the present day.
They're all out of print apart from The Sky in Stereo, Manhole#3 and a few copies of Whores of Mensa#3. Maybe I should make a mini comic of all my old mini comics..?

Anyway, bibliographical details follow:
